01

What Should a Moving Budget Include?

A complete upwise capital moving budget includes three groups of costs, before the move, on moving day and after you arrive, plus deposits, utility setup and a 10% to 20% buffer for surprises.

Most budgets that fall short do so because they price only the truck or the movers. The transport bill is often less than half of what a move really costs once you add the security deposit and first month's rent at the new place, overlapping rent at the old place, fuel and hotels, and the dozens of small purchases that follow you through the door. Writing every line down before you book anything is the simplest way to avoid putting surprise costs on a high-APR credit card or taking a larger personal loan than you planned.

The tables below list the common line items with typical ranges. Copy the ones that apply to you into a spreadsheet, replace each range with a real quote as you collect them, and keep the total current. If part of the move will be covered by a personal loan, that total becomes the number you build an upwise capital loan request around, so it pays to get it right.

All ranges on this page are planning estimates, not quotes. Costs vary widely by city, home size, distance and season.
02

Costs to Budget Before Moving Day

Costs before moving day are usually the largest group, because the security deposit, first month's rent, mover or truck reservation and packing supplies are often due one to four weeks before you load anything.

Common costs before moving day (estimates)
Line itemTypical rangeWhen it is usually due
Rental application and screening fees$30–$100 per adultWhen you apply
Security deposit at the new homeOften one to two months of rentAt lease signing
First month's rent at the new homeOne month of rentAt lease signing or move-in
Mover deposit or truck reservation$0–$500When you book
Packing supplies (boxes, tape, wrap)$80–$300Two to three weeks out
Professional packing, if hired$300–$2,000+Moving week
Cleaning the old home$0–$350Last days before move-out
Pet deposit or pet fee, if any$200–$500 or monthly pet rentAt lease signing
Time off workLost wages for unpaid daysMoving week

Lost wages deserve a line of their own. If you are paid hourly and take three unpaid days to pack, drive and unload, that income gap is a moving cost even though no one sends you a bill for it. Some people are surprised that it changes how large a personal loan they need.

Movers and landlords set their own deposit rules, so ask each one what is refundable and when. A refundable mover deposit is a cost you can recover; a nonrefundable booking fee is not. Write the refund terms next to each line so you know which money is gone, which may come back, and which costs a personal loan would really need to cover.

03

Moving Day and Travel Costs

Moving day costs cover the truck or crew itself, fuel, labor, tips, meals and any travel between homes, and on a long-distance move they can include several nights of lodging.

Common moving-day and travel costs (estimates)
Line itemLocal moveLong-distance move
Rental truck or container$50–$300$1,200–$6,000
Professional movers$500–$3,000$2,500–$18,000
Fuel for the truck and cars$30–$100$300–$1,500
Loading or unloading help (labor only)$200–$600$300–$900
Tips for the crew$40–$150$80–$300
Meals and snacks$30–$80$150–$900
Hotel nights$0$100–$900
Tolls and parking permits$0–$100$40–$200

Long-distance numbers vary the most. Our guide to how much it costs to move across the country breaks transport costs down by method and home size, including fuel and hotel estimates for a five- or six-day drive, which is useful when you size an upwise capital moving loan request.

Two small items cause a lot of moving-day stress: crew tips and parking. Keep tip money in cash, and if your city requires a permit to park a truck on the street, get it a week ahead. A parking ticket or a crew waiting for a spot can quietly add $100 or more to the day. Small costs like these are better paid from your cash buffer than folded into a personal loan.

04

Costs After You Arrive

After-arrival costs include utility deposits and setup, internet installation, replacement furniture, a pantry restock, renters insurance and, after a state-to-state move, a new driver's license and vehicle registration.

Common costs after you arrive (estimates)
Line itemTypical rangeNotes
Electric and gas deposits or setup$0–$300Often waived with good payment history
Internet installation and equipment$0–$150Self-install kits can be cheaper
Water, trash and sewer setup$0–$100Sometimes billed through the landlord
Renters insurance, first payment$10–$30 per monthMany leases require it
Groceries and household basics$150–$400Spices, cleaning supplies, toiletries
Replacement furniture and curtains$200–$2,000Items sold or left behind
Driver's license and vehicle registration$50–$400Varies widely by state
Keys, locks and small repairs$20–$150New keys, shelf brackets, hooks

These costs trickle in over the first month, which makes them the lines most often missing from an upwise capital moving budget. Set aside a separate amount for them instead of assuming your next paycheck will cover them, especially if your new rent is higher or your first paycheck at a new job arrives two to four weeks after you start. Leaving them out is a common reason people open a new card balance after already using a personal loan for the move.

05

Deposits and Utility Setup Explained

Deposits are often the single largest line in a moving budget, because a security deposit can equal one or two months of rent and is due before you move in, while your old deposit may not come back for weeks.

Security deposits

Many states cap security deposits, often at one or two months of rent, and set a deadline for returning them after move-out, commonly between 14 and 60 days. Landlords can deduct for unpaid rent and damage beyond normal wear. Plan as if the old deposit will arrive late and a little short, and do not count it as money available for moving day. Treat it as a bonus that can rebuild savings or shorten a personal loan, not as moving-day cash. Photographing the old home on your way out and sending a forwarding address in writing both help it come back faster.

Utility deposits and setup

Electric, gas and water providers may ask for a deposit if you are a new customer with no local payment history, and some run a credit check. Asking your old provider for a letter showing on-time payments can sometimes reduce or waive that deposit. Internet providers may charge for installation or equipment unless you self-install. Schedule setup one to two weeks ahead so service starts the day you arrive.

When people search for upwise capital moving loans, deposits are usually what pushed the budget past their savings. Listing each deposit with its due date and expected refund date shows exactly how long savings or a personal loan will be carrying the cost. If you read upwise capital reviews, look for comments about deposits and timing to judge whether a request fits your calendar.

06

How Big Should Your Moving Buffer Be?

A moving buffer of 10% of the total works for most local moves, 15% for long-distance moves and 20% when dates, the new home or the mover's final price are still uncertain.

Suggested buffer by move type (guideline)
SituationSuggested bufferWhy
Local move with firm quotes10%Fewer moving parts; most costs are known
Long-distance move with a binding estimate15%Fuel, lodging and fees can still change
Long-distance move with a non-binding estimate15%–20%Final weight can raise the bill
Move date or new lease not yet confirmed20%Overlapping rent or storage may be needed

Keep the buffer in your checking account or a savings account you can reach quickly, not in a sealed envelope you forget about. If you finish the move with the buffer untouched, you can use it to pay down any personal loan early, as long as your lender charges no prepayment penalty.

If you plan to borrow, include the buffer in your upwise capital loan request only when savings cannot cover it. Requesting an extra 10% you never spend means paying personal loan interest on money that sat idle.

Worked Example: An Upwise Capital Moving Budget

Two renters moving a two-bedroom apartment about 900 miles with a rental truck and hired loading help reach a full cost of about $9,246, including a 10% buffer, in this upwise capital moving budget example.

Example budget: two-bedroom, 900-mile DIY truck move with $1,650 rent (estimates)

TotalEstimated full moving budget$9,246

The couple has $6,000 in savings they can use without touching a separate emergency fund, which leaves a gap of about $3,246 for a personal loan or more trimming. They trim the furniture line by $246 by buying used, bringing the gap to $3,000. Their old $1,500 security deposit should come back within the state's deadline, but they leave it out of the plan because it will arrive after the bills are due.

To cover the remaining $3,000, they compare upwise capital personal loan offers. At 28.84% APR, a $3,000 personal loan would cost about $207.27 a month over 18 months, about $165.95 over 24 months or about $125.46 over 36 months (estimates; no origination fee assumed). They choose the 24-month estimate and plan to put the returned $1,500 deposit toward the balance if their lender allows early payoff without a penalty. Before submitting, they read upwise capital reviews to see how others described the timing of offers.

This example uses hypothetical people and prices for illustration only. Your costs, APR and personal loan payment will differ depending on your move, credit, lender and state.
08

Ways to Shrink a Moving Budget Before Borrowing

The quickest ways to shrink a moving budget are to cut shipment weight, negotiate deposits and lease dates, and move off-peak, since every dollar trimmed is a dollar you will not need to cover with a personal loan.

  • Ask about deposit options: some landlords accept a smaller deposit for applicants with strong credit, or let you spread it over two or three months.
  • Sell before you ship: furniture you would replace anyway still costs fuel or freight to move.
  • Use your network: friends who help load can replace paid labor, though a meal and a thank-you are still a line item.
  • Time the lease: negotiating a move-in date that ends the overlap can save half a month of rent or more.
  • Delay nonessential purchases: living with a few empty rooms for a month keeps furniture off a credit card or personal loan.
  • Check before you borrow: skim upwise capital reviews and lender terms so you know what fees to expect.

Once you have trimmed what you can, compare what is left with your savings. If the gap is a few hundred dollars, a slightly smaller buffer or a month of tighter spending may close it without borrowing. If the gap is $1,000 or more and the costs are firm, a fixed-rate personal loan can be easier to manage than several card balances, and an upwise capital personal loan search with an exact number keeps you from requesting too much.

If you are weighing a personal loan for the first time, upwise capital reviews show how other people describe the request process, which can help you decide whether the option suits your move.

09

Covering the Gap With a Personal Loan

A personal loan can cover the part of a moving budget that savings cannot, and requesting only that gap, rather than the whole budget, keeps the monthly payment and total interest as low as possible.

Through our free request form, one request for $500–$5,000 reaches lenders in our network, and each lender sets its own APR, fees, term and funding time. Typical APRs run about 5.99% to 35.99% across lenders, and some state-licensed installment lenders charge more. Our moving loans page explains which costs a personal loan can cover and how to time a request around your move date, and our rates guide shows how fees change the total. Compare what you read in upwise capital reviews with the actual terms in any offer.

  • Use your finished budget total, minus savings, as the starting number for any upwise capital personal loan request.
  • Run a few amounts and terms through the personal loan calculator and test the payment against your new rent, not your old one.
  • Pick the shortest personal loan term whose payment still leaves room for the after-arrival costs above.
  • Check whether a personal loan offer includes an origination fee that is subtracted from the funds, and request slightly more only if you need to net the full gap.
  • Read upwise capital reviews for how others describe the request process and timing before you submit.
Representative example: borrow $2,000 over 36 months at 28.84% APR → about $83.64 per month, about $3,010.95 total repaid and about $1,010.95 in interest (estimate; no origination fee assumed).

Checking personal loan offers through many lenders typically starts with a soft credit inquiry, and accepting an offer may lead to a hard inquiry, depending on the lender. Personal loan availability varies by state, and no lender in our network is obligated to make an offer. Upwise capital reviews can give you a sense of the process, but only the lender's agreement sets your rate and terms.

FAQ

Quick answers

Should first month's rent go in my moving budget?

Yes, if it is due at lease signing or before your next regular paycheck. Many people treat it as a normal living cost, but when it lands in the same week as the security deposit and the truck, it belongs in the moving budget so the total reflects the cash you actually need.

How can I estimate a moving budget before I have any quotes?

Start with the upwise capital moving budget ranges in the tables above, using the high end for anything you are unsure about, and add a 15% to 20% buffer. Replace each range with a real quote as you collect them, and your total will tighten quickly, which also helps if you later compare personal loan offers.

Can I count my old security deposit as money for the move?

It is safer not to. Landlords often have weeks to return a deposit and may deduct for cleaning or damage, so the money usually arrives after moving bills are due. Use it afterward to rebuild savings or pay down any personal loan balance from the move.
